Thomas T.H. Wan, Ph.D.

Thomas T.H. Wan is Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Administration, Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia. He holds the Arthur Graham Glasgow Chair at the University. Professor Wan received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Tunghai University, Taiwan; a Master of Arts and a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Georgia; and a Master of Health Sciences from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, where he was also a National Institutes of Health post-doctoral fellow.

His over 20 years in academia encompass faculty positions at Cornell University; the University of Maryland Baltimore County; and his current position at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he has been teaching since 1981.

As a leader in the field of medical sociology, Professor Wan has served in many capacities, including Director of the Williamson Institute for Health Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University; as the Associate Editor of the journal Research on Aging; as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gerontology; as a member of the Executive Committee for the Association for Social Scientists in Health; as a member of the Governing Council, Medical Care Section, American Public Health Association; as a Founding Member of the Asian American Caucus of the American Public Health Association; as a member of the Research Agenda Committee, National Institute on Drug Abuse; a Senior Research Fellow of the National Center for Health Services Research; as a member of the Study Section on Aging and Human Development II, National Institute on Aging, and as a National Institutes of Health-Housing and Urban Development Health Grant Review Consultant. Currently, he serves as a member of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Wan is a highly productive scholar who has contributed numerous publications to the scientific literature, including articles for the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Health Services Management Research, Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Community Mental Health Journal, Health Services Research, Medical Care, Journal of the American Medical Association, and the American Journal of Public Health, and four books in the field of aging and health.

His research interests are centered in managerial epidemiology, long-term care, health services evaluation, and clinical outcome studies.
