Ruth Tappen, Ed.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., is Christine E. Lynn Eminent Scholar and Professor in the College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University. She holds a doctorate in nursing education form Teachers College, Columbia University, and has completed a postdoctoral fellowship in instrumentation and clinical research at the College of Nursing, University of Arizona.
Her work is concerned primarily with the care of older adults, particularly those with long-terms chronic conditions such as Alzheimers disease and related dementias. Her research has been funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; the Division of Nursing, Bureau of Health Professions, Department of Health and Human Services; and the National Institute for Nursing Research, National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Tappen is the author of numerous articles on practice, administration, and education related to older adults, and has presented a number of papers on her research, both nationally and internationally. She is also the author of the textbook Nursing Leadership and Management: Concepts and Practice, now in its third edition.
Dr. Tappen is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and served as an Ombudsman for the District X Long Term Care Ombudsman Council, Broward County, Florida. She is also adjunct nurse researcher and associate if the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) of the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Miami.
