Introduction

You may have heard about the importance of doing crossword puzzles or playing games to keep your mind active. Although this is certainly good advice, in reality an endless supply of activities can be used to challenge and strengthen your mind. We, the authors, have researched and tested more than 65 topics that we have turned into worksheets that we encourage you to explore. Be prepared to learn about everything, from your five senses, to city nicknames, to chocolate and other desserts.

One of the most important goals of this manual is that you enjoy spending time completing the worksheets. Although getting the correct answers is rewarding, you may find that working with a family member, friend, or neighbor to figure out the answers is even more fun. There are a variety of subjects explored in these worksheets; some questions will be easy for you while others will be more challenging. The worksheets are in a variety of formats, from multiple choice, to fill in the blank, to brainstorming and others. Do not worry if you cannot find the answer to every question on a page; just enjoy taking the time to scout out the answers by talking with others or using reference materials such as the Internet, dictionaries, and encyclopedias to locate your answer. In addition, you may find more than one answer for some questions. Above all, have fun with the manual-the true benefit of the worksheets is participating in the process of finding the answers, not knowing every answer!

Although completing these worksheets is interesting and fun, there are a variety of other benefits that come from using this manual. By participating in mentally challenging activities on a regular basis, you can strengthen and sharpen your mind. The worksheets in this manual will encourage you to research and discuss topics that you may never have had an interest in or even thought of learning about before. With each worksheet that you complete, you will gain a little more knowledge to tuck away and add to a lifetime of learning and experiences. Socializing with others about the worksheets is important also. Completing the worksheets with another person can foster camaraderie and purpose. Simply put, the worksheets contain fun topics of conversation that everyone will enjoy discussing. In addition, interacting with others helps to decrease feelings of loneliness and depression. Finally, the questions on each worksheet can trigger a variety of memories and encourage you to reflect and analyze how things have changed over the decades. As you go about answering the questions on each worksheet, you will find that not only are you enjoying yourself, but you also are stimulating your mind, your senses, and your memory. Enjoy!

INFORMATION FOR FACILITATORS

Not only are the worksheets in this manual beneficial for individuals, but they are also an excellent resource for professionals who work with people who want to strengthen their minds. For these professionals (i.e., facilitators), the following are some tips and suggestions to make your sessions as beneficial as they can be.

The answers to each question are listed on the back of each worksheet (i.e., the answer sheet). Make sure to look at the bottom of the answer sheet to the facilitator section. In this section, you will find valuable tips and suggestions to encourage discussion, find further resources, and expand on the topic. The worksheets are designed to be reproducible. We suggest running enough copies (front side only) for each person whom you are working with. You may even want to provide extra copies for people to take home with them so that they can give them to family members or friends to work together on the topic.

When you gather together to go over the worksheets, make sure that participants are relaxed and focused on the topic before you begin. You can ask them how they liked the worksheet, if they found it easy or difficult, or who they worked with to complete it. When reviewing the questions, encourage people in the group to share their answers. Avoid just "reading off" the answers, and take time to let people share any thoughts, memories, or stories that arise. Make the group feel comfortable by encouraging them to share or by sharing a story of your own. Many of the topics are about common items or cultural icons. Whenever possible, bring in an object (or several) that signifies the topic of the worksheet. For example, one of the worksheets is about foreign currencies. Try to find samples of different currencies that the group can handle. For even more fun, bring in samples of foods such as a variety of chocolates for the Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate worksheet.

Above all, the most important aspect of the worksheets in this manual is that they spur conversation, encourage sharing, and stimulate the mind. If you have fun with them, then the people you work with will also!

Personalities in Advertising

The famous Oscar Mayer Wienermobile began advertising in 1936, complete with Wiener Whistles. Other "personalities" began even earlier, all with the attempt to lure customers to use their products. Use the following clues to name the advertising personalities described.

1. What jolly, rotund figure has advertised tires since 1898?

2. What green, larger-than-life figure from the valley has advertised a variety of vegetables since 1928?

3. Which cat advertises 9Lives Cat Food?

4. Which man, wearing a white chef's hat, has his face on a red-and-white label advertising cheap pasta with tomato sauce?

5. What plump white figure began advertising "poppin' fresh" baking products in the 1960s?

6. Who has adorned pancake mix and syrup since 1893, though her appearance has changed radically to be more socially appropriate?

7. Kellogg's Frosted Flakes are promoted by which animal, who has a trademark growl of "They're grrrreat!"?

8. Which genie-looking man advertises products for household cleaning?
