Discover verbal and physical techniques for addressing aggression and other difficult behaviors-including biting, kicking, grabbing, pulling, and choking-exhibited by people with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and related disorders. In this engaging seminar, professional caregivers will learn practical skills for fostering a safe and successful caregiving environment for themselves, fellow employees, and residents alike.

The first day of the seminar focuses on reducing anxiety and aggression in residents. The speaker covers:

  • the impact of Alzheimer's disease on information and thought processing
  • environmental stressors that trigger aggression
  • sources of distress, discomfort, or pain that may impact behavior
  • physical techniques for improving person-oriented care
  • validation and habilitation therapies to reduce agitation
  • verbal and non-verbal communication methods for fostering safety
  • methods for overcoming bathing fears
  • non-pharmacological strategies to reduce anxiety, including therapeutic touch, music therapy, reflexology, and massage
  • physical techniques for safely ending combative behaviors such as kicking, biting, and choking
An optional second day of training is designed for managers, supervisors, and trainers of direct care staff. Participants will learn:
  • successful strategies for training and coaching others
  • principles of effective presentations
  • debriefing techniques
  • methods for supporting injured parties
  • ways to prevent caregiver burnout
  • strategies for finding time for respite and ongoing education
