HPP Releases New Edition of Trusted Resource in Health Administration

Baltimore, MD (June 2010) — Professors who teach health care administration have long been familiar with the text, Cases in Health Services Management, which Health Professions Press is proud to release in a new Fifth Edition.

For more than 25 years, Cases in Health Services Management has provided challenging real-life scenarios that allow students to debate critical issues, hone decision-making skills, and apply their knowledge to challenges they may encounter in future health care settings. This outstanding casebook allows students to explore the unique blend of business and health delivery issues presented by today's health services systems. Its 28 cases involve such pivotal issues as quality improvement, strategic planning, ethical dilemmas, organizational dynamics, cost-benefit analyses, resource utilization, and more — all of which are encountered by health services administrators and managers. This text is ideal for capstone and issues courses as well as those in health services organization and management, strategic planning, and finance and marketing. It is often used in conjunction with the companion text, Managing Health Services Organizations and Systems, 5th edition, to fully prepare students for their future careers.

Each of the editors — Jonathon S. Rakich, Ph.D.; Beaufort B. Longest, Ph.D., FACHE; and Kurt Darr, J.D., Sc.D., FACHE — has extensive experience in the practice and teaching of health services management:

Dr. Rakich received his master of business administration from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and his doctorate from Saint Louis University. His university instructional areas are strategic management and health services administration. During his 36 year teaching career, he has coauthored 3 books in 12 editions, 40 journal articles, and 35 conference proceedings and professional papers.

Dr. Longest's primary faculty appointment is in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health. He holds a secondary appointment as Professor of Business Administration in the Katz Graduate School of Business. He consults with health care organizations and systems, universities, associations, and government agencies on health policy and management issues.

Dr. Darr holds a doctor of science from The Johns Hopkins University and a master of hospital administration and a juris doctor from the University of Minnesota. He regularly presents seminars on health services ethics, hospital organization and management, quality improvement, and the application of the Deming method in health services. He is the author and editor of books used in graduate health services administration programs and numerous articles on health services topics.
