Valuable HPP Resources Can Be Tied to New HBO Documentary Series, The Alzheimer’s Project, Raising Awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease

Baltimore, MD (May 20, 2009)— In an effort to promote awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and of the progress being made toward treatment and a cure, HBO has produced the documentary The Alzheimer’s Project in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association®, Fidelity® Charitable Gift Fund, Geoffrey Beene Gives Back® Alzheimer’s Initiative, and the National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health. This comprehensive public awareness program began airing May 10th and combines a four-part televised program with a robust website (www.hbo.com/alzheimers) that features additional information including supplementary video clips and current opportunities for getting involved in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

Health Professions Press (HPP) is an independent publisher that has long been an advocate for Alzheimer’s–related issues through its diverse and award-winning titles on topics ranging from caregiving best practices to providing meaningful activities. A notable new title, publishing in July 2009, is the newly revised Speaking Our Minds: What It’s Like to Have Alzheimer’s, by dementia expert Lisa Snyder. It chronicles the experiences of seven diverse individuals with Alzheimer’s interwoven with Ms. Snyder’s own insightful analysis and explanations. Much like the first segment of the HBO series, called "The Memory Loss Tapes," Speaking Our Minds reports first-hand what it’s like to have Alzheimer’s from the perspectives of actual individuals with the disease.

Chuck Jackson, featured in the HBO series, is also quoted in several HPP books. As an individual with dementia himself, public awareness and advocacy for Alzheimer’s and other dementias is very important to him. Most persons with dementia struggle with finding meaningful activities for their lives and Jackson’s life offers encouragement to those individuals. When he is not traveling on advocacy campaigns, he finds satisfaction in things like gardening and photography. "Experiencing connection with the world around me – whether it is with people, plants, rocks, or animals – through all of my senses [helps] the art and writing that I do – I think that everything that I do is a triumph over the disease."[1]

Other best-selling HPP titles include Alzheimer’s from the Inside Out by Richard Taylor, a first-hand account of what it’s like to have "dementia, probably of the Alzheimer’s type," and The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer’s Care by Virginia Bell and David Troxel, which has revolutionized the way persons with Alzheimer’s are cared for in both professional and family care settings.
